Custom RIFLE FAQ

What is your best-selling rifle?

Our best-selling rifle is the Long-Range Hunter Pro. It offers the right balance of long-range accuracy, field-ready weight, and practical hunting performance, which makes it the go-to choice for a lot of serious hunters. Explore each model to find the rifle that best fits your terrain and mission.

What is the typical custom rifle build timeline?

Once your order is placed, we secure any components not already in inventory and begin the build process. Each rifle is assembled to SMR’s exact specifications, then tested and verified before delivery. Most builds take approximately nine months after parts are on hand. Timelines can vary, but our team will keep you updated throughout the process.

How does the consultation work?

Every custom build starts with a consultation. You’ll speak one-on-one with an SMR expert to cover how and where you hunt or compete, your timeline, weight and balance preferences, optics plan, and budget. That call isn’t a sales pitch—it’s a technical conversation to narrow choices and define tradeoffs so we can recommend the right platform and components. After the call we’ll send a build outline and estimated timeline so you can decide with confidence.

What sort of payment is required to start a build?

A 50% non-refundable deposit is required to start a custom rifle build. The deposit secures parts and scheduling in our production queue. The remaining balance is due prior to delivery. For full details on deposits, cancellations, and timelines, see our Returns, Refunds & Shipping policy.

Can I buy a rifle from you and have it shipped to my dealer (FFL)?

Yes. All firearms are shipped only to a properly licensed FFL dealer. During checkout you can select a dealer from our approved list or submit a new dealer for verification. It’s your responsibility to confirm the receiving FFL will accept delivery before placing the order. NFA items require an FFL authorized for NFA transfers. Once the dealer is verified, we ship directly to them and provide tracking and shipment details.

What customization options are available (actions, barrels, chassis, triggers, finishes)?

We offer a full range of customization focused on performance and durability: choice of SMR actions, premium match-grade barrels, threaded muzzles, chambering options, custom chamber work, chassis and stock options (carbon, composite, aluminum bedding blocks), adjustable cheekpieces and length-of-pull, match-grade triggers (including our TT Diamond), bedding and pillar options, muzzle devices and suppressor-ready threading, and Cerakote or other finishes.

During your consultation we’ll recommend the combination that best matches your mission and balance requirements.

Do you offer Cerakote or other finish options?

Yes. We offer Cerakote and professional finish work appropriate to the build—functional, durable finishes chosen to protect the rifle and match your use case. Finishing is performed after final proofing and accuracy testing, and rifles are reassembled and test-fired after the finish is applied to confirm final performance.

What accuracy guarantee do you provide and how is it validated?

Each Snowy Mountain rifle is covered by our accuracy standard: rifles are built and tested to meet a sub-½ MOA performance (depending on configuration and barrel choice). We validate accuracy using a custom load developed for that individual rifle and record test targets at 100 yards under real conditions. The load data and test targets become part of your rifle’s documentation.

What is included in the build (testing, load development, documentation)?

Every custom SMR build includes:

  • Component selection and inspection to SMR standards.
  • Precision chambering, fitment, assembly, and headspace.
  • Load development tailored to that rifle (documented).
  • Accuracy testing and recorded targets.
  • Final strip, finish (Cerakote if selected), reassembly, and a last verification test.

You’ll receive a build packet that includes the load recipe, velocities, test targets, and component list tied to your rifle’s serial number.

Can I bring my own parts or components?

You may supply certain components, but any customer-supplied parts must be approved before we begin work. We’ll inspect parts for fit, material spec, and compatibility. If we accept customer parts, note that warranty coverage and delivery timelines may be affected—SMR reserves final approval rights and will document any exceptions in writing before starting the build.

Do you provide spare parts or replacement components for custom builds?

Yes. We stock a selection of SMR-branded components and can source common replacement parts and consumables. If you need a specific component for your build or for future service, contact our parts team and we’ll verify availability, pricing, and lead time. For rare or obsolete parts we’ll provide alternatives or sourcing guidance.

Do you offer package builds (rifle + scope + mount + training)?

Yes. We can quote full-package solutions that combine a custom rifle, optic and mount selection, mounting/torque/reticle setup, and Long Range Academy training. Packages are quoted during the consultation so everything is spec’d to work together and delivered as a single, verified system.

How do I schedule follow-up work or upgrades after I receive my rifle?

Contact Customer Support to schedule service. Whether you need a rebarrel, optic re-zero, cerakote refresh, or an upgrade, we’ll provide instructions for shipping and an estimated turnaround. Service scheduling is handled by appointment; we’ll confirm arrival, assess the work, and provide a firm quote and timeline before any work begins.

Do you provide guidance on optics selection and mounting/zeroing?

Yes. We advise on optics selection based on the rifle’s role, ballistic performance, and your shooting style. Our service includes professional scope mounting, torque specs, bore-sighting, and zero verification. We also provide the documented zero and sighting data with your rifle. If desired, optics setup and zero confirmation can be handled at the Long Range Academy during training sessions.

What’s the difference between your rifle series/models?

Head to our Custom Rifles page (or any rifle model page) and use the Compare checkbox. Check the models you’re considering and you’ll get a side-by-side breakdown so you can see the differences in specs and intended use at a glance.
